Hiatal Hernia and GERD – The Link

One of the symptoms of Hiatal Hernia is GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), that intense burning in the chest. You may or may not know that you have the condition. In most cases, people do not know they have a hiatal hernia.

Most often it becomes noticeable when you cough, vomit, or engage in unusual physical strain from excessive physical exercise or simply from intense laughter. I experience it in fits of laughter. I also get the pain if I drink fluids (like beer or soda) with a spicy meal like Mexican food.

The lining in the stomach is capable of withstanding the gastric juices in the stomach. The lining in the esophagus cannot.

The two muscles that help keep the stomach’s bile or gastric juices from entering the esophagus are the diaphragm and the esophageal sphincter, a valve. The diaphragm helps the sphincter keep gastric juices in the stomach it also separates the lungs from the lower part of the body.

The sphincter is a ring like muscle. It passes through a hole in the diaphragm called the hiatus. This ring like muscle normally acts as a one-way valve that stops the back flow (refluxing) of food and bile from the stomach.

Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernia occurs in one of two ways or both. It can occur when the stomach pushes up through the opening in the diaphragm (the hiatus); or, when the valve in the esophagus, the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), fails.

The failure of the valve may result from a weakening of the surrounding tissues and can be aggravated by obesity and/or smoking. The hiatal hernia is the actual stomach protruding through the LES (lower esophageal sphincter).

With this protrusion of the stomach into the esophagus, the stomach’s bile, called the refluxate, enters the delicate lining of the esophagus. This in turn causes heartburn or the unpleasant regurgitation of bile into the throat.

The link then as you can see between hiatal hernias and GERD is a physical one.
